No spoilers in this review of The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins. I give it 3 stars.
I’m torn on how to review The Girl on the Train. I don’t usually enjoy a book in which I don’t like the main character. That character was Rachel, and she was not likable at all. Her life was a disaster and I couldn’t identify with her. In fact there were no redeeming characters at all in my opinion. No one to root for.
But….I couldn’t put it down. After I passed the halfway mark I was hooked. I binge read the end which usually means that I really enjoy a book. I had to know what happened! The suspense level was great. I really didn’t figure everything out until over three quarters of the way through. Early on I had a theory that I was just sure of, but it turns out that I was very wrong. Hawkins kept me guessing and kept me interested. And that’s not nothing.
My overall feeling is that I do recommend this novel. The suspense pulled me along and not the characters which frankly was an interesting change for me. Not that i’m going to start seeking out hate-worthy main characters in my reading material now.
And, well, I love watching a movie based on a book. I’m off to the cinema.
Has anyone seen the movie? Is it a good adaptation?
