I give it 3.5 stars.
V.E. Schwab’s Shades of Magic series continues to be an intriguing tale. In A Gathering of Shadows we find Kell feeling more trapped by his “princely” life than ever and Lila, ever the adventurer, has run away from her former life as well as the one she might have had in Red London. This second installment of the Shades of Magic trilogy did not focus on the “other Londons” quite as much as we found in A Gathering of Shadows. The main focus is on Red London and a magicians tournament held within. It was very interesting to see the magic of this world in action and to meet lively new characters from the surrounding lands.
Kell struggles with his new, rather unpleasant, connection to Prince Rhy while Lila, aboard a ship called the Night Spire, stokes the fire of her desire to wield magic. Both characters were well developed and I felt a true connection to each. I hugely enjoyed the new character Alucard Emery, Captain of the Night Spire as well. He provided an animated bantering partner for Lila and he contained engaging surprises of his own.
While it did take me several chapters to really get into the story, I was completely hooked by the end. The cliffhanger was fantastic and I can’t wait to read the third book, A Conjuring of Light. I recommend this book for all of the magic lovers out there!
