No spoilers in this rapid review of The Diviners by Libba Bray. I give it 4 stars.
Libba Bray’s novel, The Diviners, was awesomely spooky. I don’t usually dig into books that leave me a tiny bit scared but this one was well worth the read. Villain Naughty John had me looking over my shoulder and distrusting anyone who dared to whistle a catchy tune in my presence.
The setting is 1920’s New York City and the protagonist, Evie, an eager newcomer to the big apple, finds herself splitting her time between breaking prohibition laws and attempting to solve a mysterious serial murder case. Evie and her friends must race against the clock, all the while fighting personal demons and keeping their own divine secrets, even from each other.
I loved the multiple story lines that crashed together throughout as well as the thoroughly researched setting and satisfying ending. Ms. Bray left plenty of unresolved questions floating around like the spirits of the dead. I caught my breath and promptly started book two.
