No spoilers in this Review of the Star-Touched Queen by Roshani Chokshi.
I give it 3 stars.
The Star-Touched Queen will likely be a favorite among readers who are drawn to an abundance of imagery and flowery, lyrical writing. In that respect, Chokshi did a stellar job. I, however, am not really one of those people. While I do appreciate the style, I cannot give it more than three stars because–well, I got a little bored at times.
The Protagonist, Maya, who is cursed from birth, makes the choice to take her chances with Amar, the Sultan of Akaran. Amar, as well as Akaran, are full of secrets that are both exasperating and intriguing for Maya as she uncovers each one by one. She jumps to costly conclusions as she navigates the mysteries within.
The two main characters, which seemed to follow a Hades and Persephone tale, were likable enough but I have to admit that the finer points of the story were a little confusing at times. Perhaps it was because I listened to the audio version of this book, which was very well done by the way, but as I read other reviews, I found that I wasn’t the only one to think so.
My overall feeling is that this was an OK story line dressed up with really pretty writing. If the pretty writing is what you like, you should definitely give it a try.
