What happened in These Infinite Threads by Tahereh Mafi?
Your These Infinite Threads summary:
Immediately following the dramatic conclusion at the ball in This Woven Kingdom, Kamran angrily charges towards Cyrus for killing his grandfather, King Zaal. Cyrus confirms that Alizeh is his bride and mentions that Kamran appears to be dying. The two royals engage in a sword fight. Kamran eventually beats Cyrus, but is quickly disarmed with magic and badly injured before Cyrus disappears.
On the back of Cyrus’s dragon heading to Tulan, Alizeh is startled by the proclamation that she will be marrying him. She falls off the dragon in shock, but is quickly rescued by Cyrus, who gives her his coat. They argue throughout the long journey.
Back in Ardunia, Kamran is publicly dying. With Hazan in prison for his betrayal, none of his advisors step in to help him. The defense minister, Zahhak, attempts to pronounce Kamran dead so that he can claim the throne for himself.
Kamran alerts the room that he is alive, and Omid rushes to save him with a sif, a rare magical healing cube gifted to him by the Diviners. However, Kamran is still experiencing effects from his near death. Gold veins have begun to stretch across his skin and mutate his eyes. This change in his royal birthright magic is concerning for Kamran, as he will be crowned king in a week and needs to appear worthy of the title.
Alizeh and Cyrus land in Tulan. They are greeted with waterfalls and fireflies, both symbols of the large Jinn population residing in Tulan. Alizeh once again argues with Cyrus and attempts to duel him. In response, he tosses her over the palace cliffside. Alizeh plummets until a dragon roughly catches her in its teeth, causing her skin to be torn apart in several places.
After she is returned to safety, Cyrus’s mother, Sarra, welcomes Alizeh energetically. Alizeh is brought to her rooms in the palace, which were prepared months in advance for her arrival.
Kamran appoints Omid as his new home minister in recognition of his heroic selflessness in saving the soon-to-be king. They arrange to visit Miss Huda’s residence to retrieve a carpet bag which Alizeh had left behind. Miss Huda explains that Alizeh worked earnestly as a servant and couldn’t have been associated with King Cyrus since they didn’t know each other prior to the night of the ball.
As Alizeh settles into her new rooms, Sarra suddenly intrudes. She runs a medicinal bath to help heal Alizeh’s wounds. While Alizeh is recuperating, Sarra conspires with her to kill her son. Her reasoning is that Cyrus has become too uncontrollable and blames his unforgivable actions on the devil instead of taking accountability for his own evils. She reveals that Cyrus has planned for months to marry, but only at the command of Iblees. Alizeh resolves to kill the young king but is extremely unsettled about it.
Kamran interrogates Hazan in the dungeons. Hazan reveals his true identity to the prince as a Jinn who has long searched for his queen. He knows that Alizeh has no intention of overthrowing Kamran, but he is shocked to discover that she is associated with Iblees. In light of these mutual discoveries and Kamran’s realization that Hazan never intended to overthrow him, the two fall into an easy friendship.
Hazan breaks free from the cell and agrees to help find Alizeh, if only so he can protect her from harm. Hazan informs Kamran that his mutating magic is a sign that his rule is no longer absolute due to the potential that Alizeh could be a worthier ruler than him. He warns that the Diviners will eventually come for him.
Cyrus dines with Alizeh in her room. As they bicker, Alizeh realizes that she is no longer fearful of him and has come to view him as an equal.
King Cyrus easily detects that Alizeh is lying to him about her motives and quickly deduces that she is now allied with his mother to kill him. Alizeh attempts to flee, but Cyrus catches up to her, and they crash together against a wall. They reestablish their mutual hatred of one another, but decide to form an unsteady truce. Cyrus hints that he acts only to help others and shares a riddle from the devil to help her understand him better:
“Should you choose to tell her why, you’ll only ruin all my fun. Soon thereafter you shall die, bit by bit and both are done.”
He assures her that he is unable to harm her and that they can work together to achieve their goals. Cyrus proposes a new offer: Alizeh will remain married to him until Iblees resolves his debts. In return, she can kill him to end their marriage and claim Tulan for herself.
Kamran is facing his own dilemmas back in Ardunia. Alizeh’s name causes him physical pain, his mother is missing, and he’s realizing that the Tulanian spies captured in the Arya mountains were an attempt to divert troops so that Tulan could win the war. His only luck has come in the form of finding Alizeh’s missing book in her carpet bag. The book is inscribed in gold with a symbol of the Arya Mountains and the words:
“MELT THE ICE IN SALT
BRAID THE THRONES AT SEA
IN THIS WOVEN KINGDOM
CLAY AND FIRE SHALL BE”
Hazan speculates that this riddle could mean that Alizeh must marry one of the Clay royals. Kamran confesses that he would’ve married Alizeh. They decide to retrieve Alizeh from Tulan and make plans to sneak away on a ship.
Alizeh sympathizes with Cyrus and considers his offer. He takes her to see Mesti, the royal city. They walk under the wisteria-lined streets and share bread. Alizeh is fascinated with the integrated lives of Jinn citizens, who can use their abilities openly. She discovers this fact when a Jinn woman suddenly drops to her knees before her and causes a frenzy over Alizeh’s appearance as the long-lost Jinn royal. Crowds swarm Alizeh and Cyrus, and Cyrus is left with no choice but to magically teleport them away.
They land in an enchanted flower field and settle into a comfortable silence. Cyrus assures Alizeh that he’ll fulfill his end of the bargain and agrees to a blood oath.
Abruptly, Cyrus falls to the ground in pain from torture bestowed by Iblees. Alizeh sits and cries over him.
How did These Infinite Threads end?
Omid, Miss Huda, Deen, and Mrs. Amina intercept Kamran at the palace. Upon Kamran’s instruction, Omid gathered everyone known to have interacted with Alizeh. Their conversation is interrupted by Zahhak and three Diviners. Zahhak intends to perform a public ceremony challenging Kamran’s claim to the throne, but the Diviners abandon Kamran in the tower prison instead as a test of his worthiness.
Alizeh remains with Cyrus for the several hours he endures the devil’s torture. She strokes his hair and cleans the blood from his face. Cyrus awakes in a dazed state and murmurs to Alizeh affectionately. He kisses her hand and snuggles into her. Alizeh is confused over his vulnerability and affection toward her. She battles with her feelings of attraction toward him. Cyrus teleports them to his bed in the palace and immediately falls asleep.
A maid knocks at the door, and Alizeh impulsively breaks down a heavily secured door to hide. She inspects the chamber and is drawn toward a cabinet. The cabinet reacts to her presence and opens to reveal her book. The door slams shut before she can reclaim it.
Kamran receives a hint from the Diviners to check his pockets. He finds a package that was gifted to him by the Diviners before he met Alizeh. Within the package is a single black feather and a note from his grandfather that the feather belongs to him. He only needs to touch it to his blood, and Simorgh will come for him.
Kamran’s grandfather, King Zaal, was born with white hair and left on a faraway cliff to die. The mythical giant bird, Simorgh, rescued him and raised him in a nest with four other birds. Eventually, he returned to the royal city as king. Kamran presses the feather to his blood, hoping for the same miracle.
Cyrus, awake and healing, pins Alizeh against a wall with a sword to her throat. He admits that he stole the book from Baz House and replaced it with a decoy. Even though he wants Alizeh to trust him, he is unable to return the book to her.
Alizeh disarms him and tries to fight Cyrus for the book. He refuses to fight her and only defends against her when she attacks, unwilling to hurt her. He asks her to marry him again before magically vanishing the sword and scolding her for breaking into his rooms.
Alizeh realizes that Cyrus has no memory of the flower field and teleporting them into his bed. He insists that she didn’t stay with him to witness his torture, because he couldn’t comprehend that Alizeh’s kindness and affection toward him were real. Iblees always puts him into a medicinal sleep to keep him alive after every torture session, so Cyrus often has difficulty remembering those periods.
He asks her if she remembers the easy affection and attraction between them. He reveals that he has been dreaming about her for months and wants them to be together fully in a real marriage. If he breaks his agreement with Iblees, his life is given over to the devil to control. He needs Alizeh to marry him, but she rejects a true relationship with him because she will never be able to trust that he won’t act against her to please Iblees.
She tells him that she might still accept the marriage offer, but it would be in title only. Cyrus requests that she informs him how she decides to kill him.
Sarra urgently knocks at the door. Thousands of Jinn are demanding to see Alizeh and know if she will be marrying Cyrus. Alizeh steps out of the room to greet her people.
Hazan, Omid, Deen, and Miss Huda break into the tower prison to rescue Kamran. Simorgh swoops down from the sky with her children. The group climbs onto their backs and launches into the sky, headed toward Tulan.
