What happened in House of Flame and Shadow?

Midgard is the latest in a long line of worlds invaded by the Asteri. The only world they failed to capture was Hel. The Daglan, also known as the Asteri, are ancient, immortal beings who feed on the power of others.

Bryce had leaped through the Gate intending to reach Hel and accept Aidas’s and Apollion’s offers to send their armies to Midgard but ended up in the Fae world under Rhysand.

When interrogated by Amren, Azriel, and Rhys, she explains that the Daglan/Asteri want to come back to his world for revenge. She also explains how magic worked in her world – they seized their full power through a ritual called the Drop, and in the process, some of the power is siphoned off and given over to the Asteri.

Bryce carried the Starsword, known to Rhys as Gwydion. When left alone in a cave, Bryce uses her star tattoo on her chest and starlight magic to guide her. Nesta appears and joins her when the only exit caves in. They meet Azriel on the way through the caves. They find an eight-point star in a cave. Bryce uses her power and a hologram appears of Silene. They recognize her from the carvings on the rocks in the tunnels. Silene talks about how the Daglan ruled over the High Fae, and the Fae ruled over humans in turn. Her mother, Theia, served as a slave and learned all she could about the Dread Trove – the Mask, the Harp, the Crown, and the Horn. Fionn, the first and last High King of the lands, was her lover. The Daglan had captured the Cauldron. Fionn created the Starsword. They won against the Daglan using their own weapons. The land powers became Theia’s. Fionn didn’t consider Theia a worthy successor and preferred Silene’s sister Helena instead. Angred, Theia plotted his murder with Pelias, her general. Since she helped make his swords, they answered to her.

Pelias convinced Theia of worlds the Daglan had not conquered yet. She was unaware that he had learned ancient summoning magic and searched for someone more powerful to seize the Trove from her. The Daglan promised rewards to Pelias. He convinced Theia to open a portal. Fae passed through the chamber to Midgard, where Daglan pretended to be Fae dispersed by the enemy.  She brought power straight to the Asteri. As more entered the new world, their home was left vulnerable. Theia opened a portal to Hel because it was the only world that had overthrown the Daglan. Prince Aidas of Hel was assigned to hunt the Asteri. Parthos was a city in Midgard where the scholars and thinkers resided, and Theia went to it for help. Though they fought, Theia was defeated. She and Aidas became lovers but couldn’t win against the Asteri. She used the Harp to transfer her power to her daughters. Silene had escaped from Midgard. Theia was murdered by Pelias. Helena had been forced to wed him.

Bryce was the Horn. Part of the Dread Trove, required to move between worlds. From Silene’s history lesson, Bryce realized the Prison they came across might hold power. Raw Fae power she channels to stop Azriel from leaving to get help from Rhys.  A coffin is revealed in the depths of the cave that holds an Asteri. Bryce releases Thiea’s mistress, who had been asleep for fifteen thousand years. Nesta saves them by killing her. Bryce teleports from the land of the High Fae to the Autumn King’s house. She escapes from house arrest by using the Truth-Teller dagger she took from Azriel and the Starsword.  While speaking to her father under house arrest, the Autumn King points out to Bryce that she had not tried commanding her power while using the Starsword and Truth-Teller. Maybe that’s why she couldn’t kill the Asteri she met with Nesta and Azriel.

Lidia Cervos, the Hind, and Pollux, the Hammer, were tasked with torturing Hunt, Ruhn and Baxian in the dungeons.  Pollux was hell-bent on finding Bryce because he thought she had killed the Harpy. But Hunt and Ruhn hadn’t revealed that it was Lidia who was responsible.

Rigelus, the Bright Hand, inks a new halo on Hunt, enslaving him. Apollion, Prince of the Pit, visits Hunt. Aidas, The Prince of the Chasm, inquires about Bryce. He refuses to tell Hunt where Bryce might be, fearing Rigelus might torture it out of him. Rigelus takes some of Hunt’s power for an experiment.

At the meat market, Sabine (Prime Apparent) finds Bryce’s friends and Sigrid – ready to take revenge on her. Flynn fires at Sabine’s face. The Viper Queen intervenes. They catch up with Tharion. Lidia visits them and reveals that she is Agent Daybright. They’re skeptical to believe her, but she pleads for their help in rescuing Ruhn and the others. Daybright was high up in the Asteri’s inner circle. She was a vital link in the rebels’ information chain. Lidia seeks Irithys to rescue Hunt, Ruhn, and Baxian.

To free them all from the Viper Queen, Ithan agrees to fight in the ring. He goes against Sigrid and kills her. They escape the meat market and head for the dock as planned by Lidia. Ithan refuses and heads to the House of Flame and Shadow.

Lidia shoots the Hawk while escorting the prisoners to see Rigelus. With the help of Declan, Flynn, and Tharion, she gets Hunt, Ruhn, and Braxion on a boat. To divert Mordoc, Lidia shapeshifts into a deer. She gets shot in the chest while jumping off the cliff. Ruhn sends Tharion to rescue her in his merman form. On the Depth Charger, Lidia wakes up. She rushes to check on her two children studying in the classroom on the vessel. The Ocean Queen agrees to keep them under her protection as long as Lidia continues being Agent Daybright.

Bryce faces the Ocean Queen, who questions her rebellion. She asks to be dropped off at Avallen.  Bryce had stolen the Autumn King’s notebook of secrets to gain favor with King Morven of Avallen.

At the House of Flame and Shadow, Ithan Holstrom goes to see Jesiba Toga. He requests a necromancer to raise Sigrid Fendyr. The Under King, highest order in the House, turns Sigrid into a Reaper. Hypaxia says she can fix it with a thunderbird. But the body is on Avallen with the Stag King – Morven.

Tharion marries Flynn’s sister Sathia to free her from King Morven. When Bryce and Hunt sleep together, their powers flow between them. Starlight and Starfire. Bryce convinces King Morven to let them go through the archives and Cave of Princes.

Hunt, Bryce, Braxion, Sathia, and Tharion venture into the Cave of Princes. They find a sarcophagus. Bryce uses her starlight magic on an eight-pointed star just like she had in the Fae world with Azriel and Nesta, and it opens. She tells them this place was built by Helena. They believed Helena used the black salt in the caves to summon demons and commune with Hel. Hunt and she drink from a bowl and are transported to a dreamlike world where Aidas, Prince of the Chasm, meets them.

Apollion, Prince of the Pit, referred to Hunt as his son. They explain the halo on Hunt’s eyebrow is a collar, but Princes of Hel cannot be enslaved to the Asteri. Hunt was Made by the Princes to aid Bryce. The Starsword calls to descendants of Helena and Theia – known as Fae Starborn. The Asteri can’t weave the powerful blades because Theia’s connection is missing.  Aidas tells Bryce she was born with a third of the power, then took a third from where Silene had stored it, and now she needed to find the third well of Theia’s power to be whole. Initially, Theia had stored power in the Starsword, but Helena removed it so the Asteri would not resurrect her to wield it.

They believe Bryce must find the last piece of power, open the portal to nowhere, and lock the Asteri away. Aidas tells her she must open the Northern Rift fully so the three princes can come save their world.

Ruhn and Lidia kiss, and eventually Ruhn confesses his feelings for her. When he realizes Flynn and Declan are missing, he goes to the Cave of Princes. Ruhn kills the Autumn King. Bryce slaughters King Mavern.

Bryce finds the last piece of magic after inserting the blade and sword in the slits in the floor. Avallan brims with power, brighter than when they had arrived. Declan tells the group that the Asteri, Polluz, and Mordoc attacked Asphodel Meadows where innocent humans lived, as punishment for their escape.

Ithan and Hypaxia arrive at Avallan. Bryce asks Hypaxia to make an antidote for the Asteri’s parasite in the water, with Ithan to guard her. Hunt asks Baxian to be his second-in-command. Ithan and Hypaxia discover that Reapers have no parasites, so she tries experimenting with one to make the antidote.

Ithan takes the antidote and feels his power amplify. As if it had been dormant due to the parasite. He goes to the Den to give the werewolves a choice to leave Sabine and choose Sigrid even in her Reaper form. Sabine appears with the astronomer and pretends like Ithan was lying and killed Sigrid on purpose. Ithan used a Fendyr sword as an offering to the Prime, Sabine’s father. He announces Ithan as his heir because his truth matches what Danika had told him. Sabine kills the Prime. Sigrid takes his and the Astronomer’s soul. Ithan kills Sabine. Sigrid flees. The pack surrenders to him.

Therion and Sathia ask the River Queen to save the people from the Asteri during the war. She agrees.

Bryce and Hunt, with her parents Ember and Randall, reach the Northern Rift. They watch security footage of the Harpy eating the guards. Hunt realizes this is why Rigelus had taken his power – to resurrect the Harpy. Bryce opens a portal at the Rift to Nesta’s room to request the Mask in exchange for her parents. Nesta agrees. The Harpy appears soon after.

Isaiah, Naomi, and Celestina (who had sold them out to Rigelus) appear. Bryce wears the Mask to stop the Harpy. Lidia gets news that Pollux has captured her sons from the Depth Charger.

Bryce’s plans to raise the dead using the Mask and have Isiah and Naomi lead them. She and Hunt will go into the Asteri’s palace. She opens the portal to Hel for Aidas.

Ithan meets his dead brother Connor with permission from the Under-King. Ithan freezes him out of fury and Hypaxia breaks him into shards of ice, making her the Head of the House of Flame and Shadow. Connor hands Ithan a bullet with the second light of every soul in the place for Bryce to use with the Godslayer Rifle. After returning to the Den, Ithan finds out that Amelie led the wolves out because they were scared.

Declan hacks into the imperial network, shares Bryce and Hunt’s video broadcasting the truth about how there were parasites in the water. Bryce killing Micah and the truth about Danika’s death are revealed. Bryce summons the dead and armies of Hel. Declan issues an evacuation order to the people. During the fight with the Asteri, Bryce kills Polaris. Joining her swords together opens the portal to nowhere, she realizes. Lidia and Ruhn find Pollux. Tharion gets shot while trying to save her sons. Lidia takes on her true form, thanks to the antidote her sister made, and turns into an elemental, into flames. She incinerates Pollux. Irithys and the sprites join the fight after watching Bryce and Hunt’s video. With the antidote, Ruhn’s dormant healing power wakes, helping heal Therion.

Ithan hands the Godslayer Rifle to Bryce with one bullet. She teleports to the core room, aiming at the firstlight core. The remaining Asteri and Rigelus try to sway Bryce, calling the crystal a kill switch – Midgard would cease to exist. But she teleports out of the hole Hunt made and fires.

How does House of Flame and Shadow end?

She takes Rigelus’s power and opens a portal, sucking the core and the Asteri, and her. A mech suit comes to Hunt and offers it to him to go through the slit to save Bryce. He successfully brings her back, dead. Jesiba gives her immortality as a gift to Bryce with the help of Hypaxia. Bryce comes back to life. Hunt tasks Isiah with leading the angels. Bryce abolishes the Fae monarchy and introduces a new government.

Bryce uses the Autumn King’s golden pen to sign parchment, wiping the royal bloodlines of the Fae from existence.

Lidia’s kids are reunited with their foster parents. Ruhn finds an apartment to live in with Lidia, with two bedrooms so her sons can visit.

Ithan is happy that all the wolves are returning from their safe spot during the war. Ithan, Lidia, Flynn, and Declan hoped the firstlight power grid would hold or they would be out of power.

Hypaxia teams up with Redner Industries to mass-produce the antidote and confirms she will have it ready by Spring Equinox. With the surge in magic after the antidote, a new island had appeared in Avallen. Bryce employs the sprites, Sasa, Rithi, and Malana, to take care of the Parthos collection now available for anyone to see. Jesiba had packed most of the artifacts that Hypaxia sent over to Hunt from the House of Flame and Shadow to the place that would be the new Griffin Antiques. Bryce didn’t know of Irithys’s whereabouts. Bryce keeps Avallen to herself until the Fae show they can be democratic.

Hunt and Bryce leave Avallen to Braxian to care for any refugees. Baxian calls and informs them that flying horses were back in Avallen. Bryce recalls Silene’s history lesson about how her mother had flying horses. Maybe Helena kept them safely hidden until it was safe to return. While Midgard still needed attention, Bryce focuses on living life a little for now.
