What happened in Fearless?

A Fearless summary:

Kai, the Enforcer, brings Paedyn back to Illya. She is presented before Kitt, the new king, and Kai’s brother. Kai, Paedyn, and the court are surprised when, instead of ordering her to be killed or punished, Kitt announces his intention to marry her.

Kitt shares his dream to see a unified and stronger Illya. Because his father, Edric, banished the Ordinaries and closed off trade with Dor, Tando, and Izram, Illya is weaker. Their population is growing, and resources are dwindling. To make Illya great again, he must take an Ordinary queen.

Kai wonders how Kitt changed from a grieving son to a headstrong king. Kitt tells him that Calum, the Mind Reader who led the Resistance, made him see the peril the kingdom is in. Paedyn asks Kitt if he truly sees a unified Illya. She learns that all he wants is to strengthen the kingdom. He hasn’t forgiven her for killing his father, the king. She agrees to marry him, seeing that there’s no option for her. It’s either marriage or death.

Paedyn has nightmares of her best friend Adena dying during the final trial. Kai whisks her off at midnight to help her calm down. She wonders if they’re going to spend the rest of their lives stealing moments like these when she’s married to his brother.

Kitt, Paedyn, and Kai take out a parade to show the city a united front. The Elites scowl at Paedyn but welcome Kitt’s presence. Kai is uncomfortable with how close Kitt and Pae are sitting. Paedyn asks Kitt to lead the parade to the slums where she lives. He agrees, but they are ambushed with man-made bombs.

To suppress the people’s refusal to accept Paedyn as their queen, another Trial is proposed. Only this time, Paedyn will go alone. The court chooses where they wish to send her. Before her first trial, Kitt tells her that it will either be Dor (the Scorches) or the Shallows (deep sea). She reminisces that she struggled to get across the first time after killing the last king. She asks Kitt to treat her like a friend, but he argues that she already has Kai. She refutes this, pretending like there is nothing between them. Later that night, Kai finds Paedyn and gives her father’s dagger back. Stealing a moment with her, he moves her engagement ring to her right hand.

The next day, her trial is revealed. She must retrieve a crown from the crypt of a former queen who rests in the Sanctuary of Souls. Paedyn remembers her time with Kai when he was tasked with bringing her back. After much trial and error, she finds the crypt. It turns out to be buried under a trap door in a cave where Kai cut her hair. After retrieving it, she fights off three bandits and makes her way back to the palace before midnight.

When they’re alone, Kitt congratulates her and notices her ring is on the wrong hand. Before she can respond, Kai takes her away to get her cleaned up. Kitt announces a ball in the evening to celebrate her win.

During the ball, Paedyn gets drunk to avoid killing Blaire, the Elite who killed her best friend, Adena, during the final trial. She dances with Kitt and Kai.

The next day, she vaguely remembers Kai saying he loves her. Kitt informs Paedyn that she will cross the Shallows and head to Izram. Kai argues that he will go with her because it is not safe. Kitt agrees. Later that night, Paedyn visits Kitt and shows him the mark the king left on her to constantly remind her she is an Ordinary.

Kai and Pae spend every night together on the ship. She reads the books Calum gave her that she loved as a child. One night, Kai wakes up and realizes Pae is an illusion. Three Elites take her away and try to throw her overboard. But he saves her in time. When they reach Izram, Queen Zaliah allows Paedyn to stay in the palace while the crew fixes the ship. She catches Kai in her bedroom and asks Paedyn if she will choose love or duty to the kingdom.

Back on the ship, they are faced by the sea monster. But Paedyn attacks it, saving the crew. They all hail her as the Silver Savior. When they return to land, Kitt celebrates Paedyn’s success in the final trial and announces the wedding will be in three days. During her dress fitting, Calum arrives and tells her she looks just like her mother. When Paedyn questions this, he says that he’s seen pictures of her mother.

Paedyn and Kai spend the night before the wedding together. On the wedding day, Kitt gives Paedyn a box of his mother’s jewelry. But she doesn’t have time to open it. Calum arrives to escort her. Kai skips the wedding. Kitt and Paedyn are married. Kitt tells her that he knows Kai is in love with her, but this alliance is important for the kingdom. For the second ceremony in Loot, she heads to her room to change.

How did Fearless end? – Fearless Summary

When she opens the jewelry box, she finds hidden love letters similar to the ones Kai and she have been exchanging to keep their distance. She also finds a photo of Queen Iris, Kitt’s mother, and the King’s first wife. She is a spitting image of Paedyn. When Calum arrives to escort her again. He reads her mind. She thinks back to the books he gave her, the roses he got for her wedding bouquet, saying she looks like her mother when she’s never had any photos of her, and realizes that he’s her birth father. He was King Edric’s Mind Reader and encouraged him to keep Paedyn in the first trials so that the Resistance could grow. They aimed to kill all the Ordinaries together in the Bowl. King Edric died thinking Paedyn was his powerless daughter. But Calum is equally ashamed of her. She knocks him out and runs to tell Kitt what has happened. She makes Kitt understand that everything he’s been doing against his will is because Calum is a Dual – he has the power to read minds and control people. Kitt is angered and kills Calum on the spot.

Kitt realizes that this new revelation makes him and Paedyn half-siblings, married to each other. The advisor suggests they keep up the pretense for the kingdom, even though Kai argues that it doesn’t make sense. Kai sees hope for a future with Paedyn. But Kitt and Paedyn agree that they need to stay married. After the ceremony in Loot, everyone accepts Paedyn as their queen.

Kai takes her to her mother’s quarters. Then, they go to visit Kitt. Kitt expresses his frustration at Paedyn coming between the brothers time and again. Kai reveals that Paedyn is more his sister because Kai is not the King’s son. Kitt is angry at Paedyn for killing his mother and his father, and now taking his brother away from him. He tells her that no matter how many trials he put her through, she always came back. He even told the ship’s captain, Torri, that they could do away with Paedyn, but she survived.

Kitt tells them that he plans to be a great king. He discloses the secret passed on from king to king about the Plague. The Plague that gave some people powers and rendered others powerless, Ordinary, was made by the king. It was spread with intention. But it wasn’t successful. That’s why King Edric hated Ordinaries. They are proof that they failed. Even Elites grow weaker over time. Kitt reveals that the roses Paedyn sent to Izram were laced with the same Plague. He plans to open the borders, spread the Plague, and rule over everyone instead of simply bringing Ordinaries back to the kingdom. Kitt was the test subject for the next Plague, but it didn’t work well. He coughs up blood and looks sick.

When Kitt tries to kill Paedyn, Kai strikes back. While dueling like they always have, Kai kills Kitt. Kitt tells him he’s written letters to Kai and to love Paedyn. He takes off the wedding band and hands it to Kai.

After burying Kitt, Kai is crowned King. He doesn’t share Kitt’s plans with the court or kingdom, honoring him. He proposes to Paedyn. Five years later, they have a daughter.
