No spoilers in this review of Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare!

I loved it!  I give it 4.5 stars!

I have mad love for everything Cassandra Clare writes. When I started Lady Midnight, I could immediately tell the writing style I love so much was back. I’m not sure any author gives me a clearer mental picture of each character. I feel like I know exactly what Julian (those eyes!) and Emma (that hair!) look like. And I don’t think any author makes me feel the characters’ emotions quite like her. I hurt when they hurt. I smile when they’re happy. And I am so angry when they’re mad!

The main characters in this new series are Emma Carstairs and Julian Blackthorn. These Shadowhunters have been best friends basically since birth. Their parents are dead by the time they’re are pre-teens, and Julian knows he can’t ever be separated from Emma. He suggests they become parabatai,

the only way he can think of to ensure they will get to stay together. As Lady Midnight opens, you can tell something has changed with their bond. An attraction has developed, and this is a precarious situation because parabatai are forbidden from falling in love. Is there any way out of this situation? In addition to this problem, Emma, Jules, and the Blackthorn siblings (Mark, Ty, Livvy, Dru, and Tavvy) are investigating a string of recent murders in L.A. Are they connected to Emma’s parents’ murders five years ago? And can they solve this mystery in time to save one of the Blackthorn siblings, who will be separated from them forever if they fail?

We are introduced to other new and intriguing characters, too…teen Shadowhunter Cristina Rosales, L.A. high warlock Malcom Fade, the Blackthorn’s tutor Diana Wrayburn, and several others. We also catch glimpses of old favorites like Magnus, Jem, Tessa, Jace, and Clary. The intertwining of all the Shadowhunters series is one of my favorite parts of Clare’s books, not to mention the seemingly impossible situations the characters get themselves into and the twists and turns in the plot. Some of my favorite moments in the book, however, were the lighter ones. Watch for my favorite funny, heartwarming scenes when all the Blackthorns are together…movie night, the diner, and the kitchen mess.

This book is an absolute must-read for everyone, especially those of you who have read Clare’s past works! Even if you haven’t, this is a great place to start! With the way Lady Midnight ends, how can we possibly wait until May 2017, when Lord of Shadows (book 2) is released, to see what happens next?!

If you want to read more about Emma’s and Julian’s back stories, read what we found out about them in City of Heavenly Fire and the Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy novellas here.
